Set in 1941, the film stars John Turturro as Barton Fink, a socially conscious New York playwright who relocates to Los Angeles after being hired by a major studio to pen a studio B-movie about wrestling. Cloistered away in the eerie, decaying Hotel Earle, Barton falls into a severe case of writer's block. He strikes up an unsettling friendship with his booming, overly gregarious neighbor, insurance salesman Charlie Meadows (John Goodman). As the studio pressures mount, Barton's reality progressively unravels into a surreal, nightmarish landscape of Hollywood satire, bizarre murders, and psychological horror.
