Leonard Shelby wears expensive tailored clothes and drives a late-model Jaguar, yet he lives in cheap, anonymous motels, paying his way with thick wads of cash. Though he appears successful, his sole purpose in life is tracking down and punishing the man who raped and murdered his wife. His search is severely complicated by a rare, untreatable form of memory loss caused by a head injury during the attack. While he can remember everything prior to that night, Leonard loses his short-term memory every few minutes, forcing him to track his investigation using an intricate network of Polaroid photographs, chart diagrams, and tattoos inked directly onto his body.

Leonard Shelby is tracking down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The difficulty of locating his wife's killer, however, is compounded by the fact that he suffers from a rare, untreatable form of short-term memory loss. Although he can recall details of life before his accident, Leonard cannot remember what happened fifteen minutes ago, where he's going, or why.
